Writing Styles

What is Style?

Debate exists regarding the definition of style as it relates to one’s writing.  Some authors feel that style emanates from one’s own being while others regard style as simply dressing up words. By definition, style is the way which something is expressed, verbalized, performed or done. Some authors believe that style and point of view are closely related or even the same.

Style is what draws a reader into the story. A skilled writer will illustrate the story and allow the reader to fill in the blanks. Emotions are touched and the reader is engaged in the story. Using an effective point of view is essential to developing an appealing style.  People will than seek out those writings which offer a similar point of view.  Style that appeals to a reader one way or another is what makes the author identifiable.  Authors are often identified by their unique style of writing and will have a devoted following.  Even if authors use similar techniques when writing,  their style is  what is likely to make them successful.

Stories written without style are often flat and are uninteresting to read. They provide information, but lack in feeling and a sense of being there. It makes the reader a passive participant instead of engaging them. While a story can be told this way it doesn’t do justice to either the author, the reader or the story. The lack of emotion, feeling or tension doesn’t do much to make reading enjoyable.  Even if the author is factually and grammatically correct, if the icing isn’t on the cake, the work is lacking.

Point of View

The style of writing and the writers point of view are  closely integrated .  Most authors are known for their works because of their perspective and their ability to express that in their style.
